BISX SPEAKS TO UNIVERSITY OF THE BAHAMAS LL.B CLASS
BISX Executives with the University of The Bahamas LL.B Programme students
The Bahamas International Securities Exchange (BISX) spent Wednesday morning, the 18th October 2017 with students from the Corporate Governance class of The University of The Bahamas’s (COB) LL.B. Programme. This is the second time BISX’s Executives were given the opportunity to speak to a Corporate Governance class. Speaking to the students was BISX Chief Executive Officer, Keith Davies and Chief Operating Officer, Holland Grant. The students in this session were able to ask questions directly to the senior Exchange Officials.
BISX Chief Executive, Keith Davies commented on the visit: “We welcomed the opportunity to work with Professor Lisa Benjamin, from the University of The Bahamas once again, as she took the proactive step of exposing her students to life within the Exchange. The students were very interested to learn about the capital markets and BISX’s place within it. I look forward to next year and hosting the next group of enthusiastic students, as a former COB and Law student, I can attest to the incredible value of having access to businesses and professionals to assist with your academic and professional foundation.”
Lisa Benjamin, the Assistant Professor, Department of Law commented, “For the second consecutive year, the team at BISX graciously lent their time to students in the third year of the University of The Bahamas Department of Law’s Corporate Governance class. Students learned firsthand about the mechanics of a securities exchange, its impact on domestic capital markets, as well as implications on wider socio-economic issues relevant for small island developing states such as The Bahamas. I am very grateful to the executives at BISX for extending their time and expertise to the students.”
The Class Representative, Clyde Newton expressed gratitude on behalf of the class by saying that, “the students of 3rd year University of the Bahamas Bachelors of Law programme were graciously invited to visit the offices of BISX to learn about the complexities of the stock exchange. It was a worthwhile experience that any University Student would be grateful for. We learned about the commercial and regulatory aspects within the securities market, and the nature of regulatory control efforts which member companies of the securities exchange should follow. Mr. Grant explained elements of the securities exchange in a manner that made most of the class feel like accountants! It was a highly beneficial experience. Mr. Grant and Mr. Davies also explained to the students that BISX is currently working on future plans which would cater to small investors and entrepreneurs alike, which would constitute cutting-edge reforms not only for The Bahamas but the region. The students of UB’s LLB programme third year are extremely grateful for the experience, and hope that BISX will continue to open its doors to eager students who are willing and ready to learn.”
